What to Expect at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment
If you’ve never seen a physiotherapist before, it’s natural to wonder what happens. The good news is your first visit is straightforward, relaxed and focused entirely on understanding your problem and getting you moving. Here’s what to expect.
1. A conversation about your history
Your physiotherapist starts by discussing your symptoms, how the problem began, your medical history and your goals. The more you share, the better we can tailor your care.
2. A physical assessment
Next, we assess your movement, strength, posture and the affected area — and may perform specific tests — to pinpoint the true cause of your pain, not just where it hurts.
3. A clear diagnosis and plan
You’ll get a plain-language explanation of what’s going on and a personalized treatment plan, including an estimate of how many visits you’re likely to need.
4. Hands-on treatment the same day
In most cases treatment starts right away — manual therapy, exercises and, where helpful, modalities — plus home exercises to keep you progressing between visits.
What to bring and wear
- Comfortable clothing that allows access to the affected area (e.g. shorts for a knee issue)
- Your insurance details for direct billing
- Any relevant reports or imaging, if you have them
